Stay on George Washington’s Former Property
Charles Town dates back to colonial times, and you can find ties to George Washington throughout the area. If you are looking for a unique historical experience, the Hillbrook is the place for you. In 1748, George Washington surveyed the area for Lord Fairfax. With his earnings from that job, he would co-purchase around 550 acres of land near Charles Town. The acreage around the current Inn’s bed and breakfast were a part of Washington’s original investment. Every place wants to claim that “George Washington Slept Here.” At the Hillbrook Inn & Spa, that claim is actually true. Washington lived at the Bullskin Plantation located 200 yards from the Inn’s current property. By 1752, the future first president would make his own land purchase for 1,459 acres along the Bullskin Creek. Eventually, Washington would own over 2,000 acres in the area, including the entire property of Hillbrook Inn & Spa.
While George Washington used the land primarily for farming, you can still see some structures dating back to the 1700s. The Patent House was believed to be constructed sometime in the early 1700s, and it is considered the first structure on the land. The current Main House was eventually added to that structure by the former owner, General Frank E. Bamford.
Relax in Luxury
You can find a variety of comfortable and luxurious accommodations at the Hillbrook Inn. Guests can get pampered with a selection of suites and guest rooms in the Main House or enjoy a little seclusion by renting out the private cottages. The Gatehouse, Hawthorn, and Farmhouse Suites are all located further down the road from the main property, but they offer you more privacy to relax without interference from the outside world.
All the rooms and suites feature a combination of country and contemporary themes. You will enjoy the luxury linens and plush beds as you wind down for the night. Most rooms feature either a walk-in shower or a soaking tub with organic bath accessories. Wherever you stay, these spaces will allow you to view the spectacular scenery of the West Virginia mountains.
The Main House is the closest building to all the amenities. All the guests have access to the main building’s common spaces, including the living room, tavern, library, and front and back terraces. This building features six guest rooms and suites. The rooms have hardwood floors, queen or king-size beds, clawfoot soaking tubs, and other luxurious amenities.
For a little more privacy, the cottages give you more space for your weekend getaway. They are only a short walking distance from the Main House. With the tall shade trees, you can enjoy a feeling of solitude at these private accommodations. Each cottage features its own unique decor and offers guests hardwood floors, large windows, whirlpool tubs, and fireplaces. You can even get a private porch to watch the sunrise as you sip your first cup of coffee of the day.
The Hawthorn House dates back to 1714, and it is two miles from the main property. The building blends modern conveniences with historic charm. Each suite features either a queen or king-size bed, clawfoot tubs, and a magnificent view of the local apple orchards. All guests can enjoy the common areas of the home, including the dining and living room, breakfast room, kitchen, wet bar, and billiards room.
The Gatehouse Suites have been newly renovated on the property. This building features only two suites: Tranquility and Serenity. These relaxing accommodations also offer the same features as the other suites. However, you may want to try out the large soaking tubs, fireplace, and dry sauna only available at these two suites.
Finally, the last building on the property is known as the Farmhouse, and it is another two miles from the Main House. The Farmhouse hosts three suites with stunning views of the apple orchards. These contemporary suites also offer the same amenities as the other rooms, including plush pillows and luxurious linens on a queen or king bed with en-suite bathrooms. Like the other buildings, the guests have access to the common areas, including the dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, wireless internet access, a business center, and the front and back porches.
